Cruising back into the Mhost Likely Green label comes a fresh-sounding release from Tromsø-based producer Keecen. Never one to be pinged into a distinctive style of music, his current releases have explored garage, broken beat, jazz, and deep house - bringing his wicked ear for hip hop blends into the spotlight. ‘Midnight City Joints’ EP merges these styles into a piece for rolling in the streets. A sun-setting EP shining with v-i-b-e-s.
Within the aptly titled ‘Urban Appeal’ heavenly strings illuminate the jazzy high hat samples, giving way to a pure feeling of warmth and happiness, as chopped-up vocals shed the feeling that everything is going to be ok. The deep bassline and accompanied 4/4 beat complement each other's flow, leaving just enough room to drift away in the sky.
‘It’s Real’ is a slightly more relaxing affair, as flowing piano lines are submerged in textures that cascade like rain. Clever sound design ricochets from one squelch to the next, opening the mind to new and unknown realms.
‘Chasing Shadows’ presses a halt on the 4x4 in favour of breaks - a broken-down chune with shining atmospherics carrying you on a 5-minute trip driving down the harmonious highway. The perfect accompaniment as daylight turns to twilight.
Lastly, ‘You Feel Me?’ goes more in-depth into his trademark soundscape. Hip-hop samples merge with UKG influences creating a low-swung piece filled with blissed-out moments.
Keecen proves once again why he is one of Norway’s most thrilling producers: consistently remaining the worlds that can be found within his vividly coloured soundscapes. It’s music that feels holistic, the type that resonates with all senses.
